Interesting. We talked a fair amount about race with our kids. By "we" I mean Martha, though: she grew up in a very tense, hostile, racially mixed neighborhood -- got beat up a lot by black kids -- so she's been pretty aggressive about laying it out. I (having grown up in a lily white small town in Oregon) probably would have just let it drift along and never paid much attention, making just the kind of assumptions you talk about here. So I'm glad our kids had Martha.


Interesting, Dale. Yeah, I think the environments we grow up in are huge -- and not "having" to think about race hasn't done many of us much in the way of favors.
