I think maybe this was the thing that turned me decisively against an academic career. (Well, this and the fact that no one offered me a job.) I found that daily quick-change exhausting. And yet the prospect of believing in my role, and not having to change in and out of it, was even scarier. You see professors like that -- the ones that will boom professorially across a little dinner table for two. I used to look at that and cringe.

On the other hand -- it's partly because you've been in authority over her, I bet, that she could derive so much comfort from you, even though she didn't (in some ways) know you very well. Sometimes I think we modern Americans are way too prim about the uses of authority.

But they don't come any primmer than me, anyway :-)
